International Award for Young People

The "International Award for Young People” formerly known as the "Duke Of Edinburgh’s Award Programme” presents young people with an individual challenge. Started in 1956 and spread across 75 countries, it is dependent on the support and encouragement of adults. Through a balanced non-competitive programme, young people are encouraged to strive for personal qualities of self reliance, perseverance and responsibility to themselves and to society in general.
It throws open the challenge to young people between fourteen and twenty-five years of age and is a voluntary programme which involves leisure-time activities.

The programme is divided into three levels.

  1. Bronze Level
  2. Silver Level
  3. Gold Level

The students of class IX & X are the award aspirants who are eligible for the

Bronze Award

Under each level, the award aspirant is entitled to complete one or more activity:

1. Service

  • Duration of service is spread over 6 months.
  • Aim is to encourage giving of service to others based on the belief that members of a community have a responsibility to each other.
  • Form of activities:
    Family life education, Conservation of projects and ecological projects, Spastics society, Red cross, Adult literacy, Help in Children’s Home, Day care and Orphanages, First aid, Mountain rescue, Home guards, Road safety, etc.,.

2. Expedition

  • Duration of venture is 2days/1night camping trip.
  • Aim is to encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery.
  • Form of activities: Expeditions, explorations and other adventurous projects, which are of equally or more demanding in nature. Rappelling, river crossing, kayaking, bungee jump, cycling, walking on a rough terrain etc., are the additional activities that can be taken up along with a trek on some steep hill.
    Students are briefed about the activities followed by map reading. They are taught to pitch the tent. They are taught to be self reliant where they wash the vessels, make fire, cook their own food with the available resources and also to eat their own coked food without any fuss or complaints. It is a team activity where the children share the work.

3. Skills and Interest

  • Duration of venture is min. 6 months for bronze level.
  • Aim is to encourage the discovery and development of personal interests and social as well as practical skills.
  • Form of activities:Music, Philately, Aquarium keeping, Clay modeling, Writing, Cookery, Art of mehendi, Fishing, Dress making, Soft toy making, Aeronautics, Puppetry, Fabric painting, Public speaking, Drawing, Photography, Local and historical survey, Sculpture, Model construction, Chess, Woodwork, etc.,

4. Physical Recreation

  • Duration of venture is attainment of standards set by the assessor/instructor.
  • Aim is to encourage participation in physical recreation and improvement of performance.
  • Form of activities: Riding, Cycling, Karate, Gymnastics, Rock climbing, Cricket, Throw ball, Archery, Athletics, Swimming, Sailing, Football, Hockey, Rugby, Squash, Yoga, Tennis, etc.,.

One of the award aspirants expressing a common sentiment remarked,
"Truly a holistic experience".

Those who achieve an Award receive the appropriate badge and Certificate at an Award Presentation Ceremony.

The operating authority may at its discretion allow young people at the age of 13 ½ years to enter the programme at Bronze level, but they shall not qualify until they reach 14 ½ years of age. All activities should be carried out at leisure time. Participants following activities within their own particular organization may count for Award purposes provided the appropriate conditions are fulfilled.

Once the aspirants have completed silver can enroll themselves for the SILVER LEVEL followed by GOLD LEVEL. Those interested youngsters can enroll directly for GOLD LEVEL provided they have completed 18 years at the time of enrolment.
