Enrichment Activities

Art/Pottery

Apart from academics, the school provides an opportunity to the junior class students to develop their fine motor co-ordination by moulding the natural clay with their tender hands in the pottery classes. The aim here is to help students improve their imagination, thinking skills and to develop co-ordination of muscles and finger dexterity. This indirectly aids them to develop neater handwriting and have a firmer grip on their pencils.

Students also enjoy art and craft classes where they get to play with colours. To enhance fine motor skills, eye-hand co-ordination and fine muscular co-ordination, Art and Craft is introduced right from class I. It helps to foster creativity, enhance aesthetic values and allow a free expression of ideas.

Some of our students have participated in Art competitions and have brought laurels to our school.


Circle time

“Circle Time” sessions provide the students an opportunity to express their views. This also serves as a portal to communicate better and develop self-confidence. Keeping this in mind Kumarans has “Circle Time” sessions to help students to confidently voice out their opinions.


Mind Stimulating Labs

Development of English Language

  • English Language Lab is introduced in classes II and III to develop their language. Efforts are being made to cater to every child’s requirement in language development. Activities like Composition, Comprehension, Creative Writing, Poetry Writing and Story Writing for different levels have been designed so that every child is benefited and their requirements are fulfilled. The activities are developed in such a manner that it would help the students to develop the skills of a language: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Computer for Fun

  • This is the age of computers. Keeping in view the requirement of the students, computer lab is introduced for class III where in students get the feel of computers and enjoy mind blowing games and Math-O-Logy sums which are both exciting and stimulating to the mind.

Dance

  • Dancing has always been a means of entertainment, recreation and communication. It is not only an artistic pursuit, but an excellent exercise to burn calories and stay fit. Dance makes the body to swing to the rhythm of music, eases the tightly packed muscles and works as a good de-stresser.
  • Dance is one of the hobby classes introduced for the junior section. The little ones enjoy learning folk dances under the guidance of the resource person.


Dramatization
  • Dramatics helps in the over-all development of a child’s personality. It encourages the students to interact effectively and they also learn to work as a team. Dramatization helps and encourages students to develop communication skills and self esteem.
  • As a part of the curriculum students of junior section are divided into different groups, and with the guidance of the teacher, present the concepts in the lessons in the form of a drama.

Fun with Science
  • Students are basically inquisitive and curious. They are thrilled by their environment. To quench the thirst of curiosity of students, Kumarans encourages the students to be one with nature through Environmental Studies and experiments. The objective of the experiments is to help the students to observe, differentiate, understand, interpret and infer and finally understand the scientific concept.

  • The students of class III are also taken to the Science labs to observe different specimens for improving their scientific concepts. Such exposure not only enriches one’s learning but also enables them to develop scientific temper.

Indoor Games / Outdoor Games
  • Concentration is not just an intellectual activity. It can be unconsciously built-in all activities of children including physical activities. So, students at Kumarans are encouraged to discover that thinking and concentration skills can be improved while having fun.
  • Children enjoy indoor games like chess, carom and table tennis.
  • To enable the students to inculcate traditional values and remember the folk games of the bygone days, the school has traditional indoor games wherein students enjoy playing traditional indoor games under the guidance of PE instructors. Children also have fun playing quite a number of outdoor games.
  • Exercise and mass drill is another category wherein children can improve their concentration skills. This is done during the P.T. sessions.

Karate

  • Karate is a form of art introduced as a hobby class at the junior level. It is believed that the benefits of karate are enormous. It is said to improve the physical and mental health of a person; it helps instill a sense of self-esteem and pride in a child; it also improves a child’s academic performance by raising their energy level, focus and concentration. On the whole, karate is an endless learning experience that provides constant challenge, keeping the students alert and boosting their confidence.
  • Kumarans has a dedicated team of karate instructors who work towards teaching these values at an early age, which in turn will benefit the children to face the challenges of life.

Kathalaya
  • Story Telling at any age is an enjoyable activity. Through stories moral values and concepts can be put across in an easily understandable way. Stories from the Indian Mythology, Panchatantra, Aesop fables are narrated to the students in the kathalaya sessions.
  • The school introduces story telling through ‘Kathalaya’ classes right from the primary level. Good values are inculcated through stories in the Kathalaya classes. The sessions also enhance students’ reasoning and language skills.

Library

To cultivate friendship with books, children are given good books to develop their reading skills. Reading skill is very much essential for the language development of students. To inculcate reading habit among students, students right from class I are introduced to the library. A period is allotted for library every week where students are given an opportunity to utilize the services of the library to the maximum. The students have a borrowing card which allows them to borrow books from the library, read them at their leisure and return the books after a week. Students are also given a chance to present a book-review of the books which they have read.


Music
  • Music has been a perennial source for soothing one’s heart and mind. It is the universal language of mankind. The students at the school are exposed to music at a very tender age which enables them to be in tune with the rhythm of music. The music that is imparted to the students in school inculcates a sense of appreciation to the culture they belong to.
  • Students are also given a chance to take part in music competitions as a part of CCA.

Value Education

Education is a systematic attempt towards human learning. It is only with the understanding of the self that we can begin to understand our relationship with others and the environment. Education in values is essential in helping each one of us to reflect on the values we hold and understand them completely. Value education is to cultivate essential values in the students so that the civilization that teaches us the essential human values can be sustained and further developed. The need for value education among children has become imperative in the present times as we are witnessing the corrosion of the moral fabric of the society resulting in a lot of immoral and unethical deeds by people.

Keeping this in view, Kumarans caters to the requirement of imparting value education, which in turn helps the overall development of the child’s personality.

We have efficient resource people who work with the primary section and focus on areas like happiness, humanity, co-operation, honesty, simplicity, love, peace and unity through stories, hymns and bhajans. They also teach sarva dharma prayer that includes the gods of all religions throughout the world.


Shloka recitation
  • The power of shlokas has been acknowledged since time immemorial. Shlokas must be recited clearly, accurately and with unwavering devotion and correct pronunciation. One who recites shlokas everyday attains peace of mind, patience, prosperity, mental stability, memory and reputation.
  • As a part of the school curriculum, one period a week has been allotted for shloka recitation. Children eagerly wait for this shloka class and enjoy it immensely.
  • We have the recitation of the bhaghavathgeetha, Vishnu sahasranama, hanuman chalisa, Dakshinamoorthy shloka and many other bhajans.
