Computer Curriculum
Computers have become the centre of many of our lives today. Almost everyone has used a computer, if only to check their e-mail or do some word processing. In a world revolving around computers, it is important to educate young people in this field. Therefore, in partnership with EZVidya™ (for primary school), computer classes for software like PrintMaster, PowerPoint, PagePlus, MS Publisher, Adobe Photoshop, Serif WebPlus, Flash Basics, CorelDraw, Visual Basic, etc. are provided.
Library
In the company of other great minds, our minds also start working overtime and the spring of inspiration gets rejuvenated. The school library is well stocked with books under every imaginable category, and children have regular library periods. In addition, they can borrow books at regular intervals. Thus, they get motivated to imbibe in the spirit of enquiry.
Labs
Science Lab
“Tell me, I may forget; Show me, I may remember; Involve me, I will never forget.” – Chinese Proverb
The science lab is a place where this is philosophy is incorporated. Children are taken periodically to the science lab, and experiments are conducted to drive home scientific principles. The lab is equipped with all the necessary chemicals and apparatus. Models and specimens are also used to enhance learning.
Computer Lab
This is a place that draws many children, whether to draw something in MS Paint or to exercise their fingers on a keyboard. There are two labs (one for primary and one for high school) which are well equipped with computers, connected through a Local Area Network (LAN), with internet access.
Resources
Academics
Teaching involves regular interaction with children in a changing world. What was perfectly alright a decade ago has now become redundant. And so, teachers have to be equipped well enough to cope with the changing atmosphere inside the classroom. To make this possible, the school has started a Teachers’ Resource Centre – Gnanotri – which is supported by Ratan Tata Trust with the collaboration of The Teacher Foundation. The Resource Centre is open to schools in and around Kumarans and its activities include workshops to share innovative teaching techniques, and updating teaching methodologies along with talks given by eminent people on understanding and improving the socio-emotional intelligence of the children. Workshops also include annual competitions, among teachers of various schools.
The helping hand does not stop at the teachers; it also extends to the children. Children on the verge of leaving school are given career counselling. Children and parents are called separately to help both sides decide which career would be most suitable for them.
The school also takes care of the emotional needs of the children. The counsellor, Mrs. Bhavani Chandrashekhar, attends to the children on a one-on-one basis to help them resolve any emotional problems, and also addresses the classes on issues that concern them.
Non-Academics
Interaction with parents
The two groups of people that have the maximum impact on a child’s life are parents and teachers. So it is imperative that both sides know where the child stands and where he needs to go. While parents are free to come whenever they want to find out any information about their wards, they are also given specific days to meet the teachers and find out details about the child’s behaviour in class and his performance across the classes. In addition, separate sessions are held with the parents to apprise them of their child’s progress.
